Lenovo Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14

The much-anticipated Lenovo Professional 2-IN-1 Ultrabook is here and does not disappoint. Well, does not disappoint a lot at least. Yes, it is practical, good looking and it has the prestigious sense of a proper Thinkpad, but…there is a but and some could say that this is kind of bad.

1. Random shut offs when not plugged in
Although the battery appears to be one of the best(if not the best of its kind), considering the battery life and the very high performance ratings, it is noticed that the ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 may automatically shutdown while in Battery mode when the system is moved, especially if the user adds external forces to the system base. Although we are all assured from Lenovo that the shutdown does not damage the system and in technical terms is caused by a malfunction of one switch, when a $1000(approx.) purchase is made from someone for a Notebook, the first thing expected from it is to work properly unplugged…or just to work.

2. Lack of a Pen
The 14 inch touch-screen in combination with its dedicated GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) except from a very nice and powerful computer it would make it a really solid art machine, if an additional option for a Pen was available. However, it is not. Beside that, the most important is the functionality of the touch-screen. Okay, it has the 10-Point Multi-touch Display, but seriously, who is going to use 10 fingers simultaneously? Technology to work with 10 fingers at a time is used and no technology to work with accuracy using a pen is used. Not very well played.

3. It weights almost 2Kgs
If you want to call it a hybrid with functionality of a Notebook and a Tablet it has to reach the expectations of both. Well, with 2 Kgs of weight it doesn’t seem to reach those to use it as a Tablet. It flips 360 degrees and becomes just a screen but is not so Tablet-y. For it’s size is just a normal Notebook, not extremely light.

4. Lack of Real-Sense 3D
Obviously, from the technical specifications, there is something special about this Ultrabook. The special thing is of course the big step of involving the powerful and switchable NVIDIA GT 840M graphics. It is a middleweight graphics card much stronger than what we usually see in this notebook’s rivals. That makes the machine work very fine with programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, many video editors and is fine with light CAD work. But with any further ambition for something more demanding like a game of its age, you will probably be disappointed. We understand that is business oriented but the ideal for a Notebook is to combine both work, creativity and fun.

5. Battery Error
Beside of the shutting-off issue it is noticed from users that an error comes up every now and then randomly, mostly when the machine is plugged-in and the error is about not detecting the battery.
