YotaPhone 2 is amazingly different
Buckle up because today we have something amazingly different. For this BadFive review we step out of the spectrum of “mainstream” devices and we jump right into something new, innovative and indisputably interesting. In this topic we will be talking about the new Smartphone of Yota the YotaPhone 2. It might not be widely known as a phone but one thing is for sure, the YotaPhone 2 is different from every other smartphone out there and it’s innovative….or at least tries to be. Trying to be innovative is desired but comes with many downsides, some of which we discuss later in this topic.
1. E – Ink Display
What distinguishes the YotaPhone 2 from all the other competitors is its E- ink display feature. E – Ink display is basically a second, black and white, display on the back of the phone. It’s a really innovative and cool idea and comes with a lot of benefits and uses, if of course it is a feature that you are looking for. Although E ink is the main concept of this smartphone it comes with a lot of problems. While using it the first thing you notice is the surprisingly common ghosting of the display. Adding to that comes the slow responsiveness of the display along with the lagy refreshing of the screen. If you don’t have patience this feature might end up annoying you. E Ink Display is a great idea and we believe that it might have a lot of uses in the future but for now it just seems too early for this kind of technology.
2. Too Expensive
In our surprise the starting price of the YotaPhone 2 is quite high. Without taking in mind the E ink display, YotaPhone 2 is nothing more than an ordinary semi-quality android smartphone. It really doesn’t operate that good to make its price seem reasonable. It is obvious that Yota based its smartphones price entirely on the E ink feature. Our opinion is that the E ink feature is definitely not enough to justify the price of the YotaPhone 2. Definitely Not Worth it.
3. Battery Suffers Under Media
Yota has developed some smart technologies to limit the amount of battery consumed by the second display on the back of the phone. Despite their efforts the battery life of the YotaPhone 2 seems to be suffering when it comes to media. While playing video or any kind of media the battery of the phone seems to be draining very quickly. Considering the price competitors of the YotaPhone 2 offer a much better battery life when it comes to media usage.
4. Average Camera
It appears that Yota has assigned all its resources to the E Ink display since we don’t find anything special for any other feature of the phone. Again, considering the high price of the phone, the YotaPhone 2 has an average camera compared to the competitors with smartphones of the same price range. You might be able to take selfies easier with the second display but that’s about it. Nothing special really with this smartphone’s camera.
5. Bad Keyboard
Last but not least comes a “funny” keyboard that seems to have a life of its own. For some reason when you are trying to text the keyboard decides to write its own words instead, in a laggy way of course. It’s something YotaPhone 2 users hate but hopefully it might change with a software update in the future.
